Microdermal Anchoring

We are very excited to announce the launch of our Microdermal Anchoring Service - a cutting edge new concept in body art only very recently having reached our shores!
Microdermals (also known as dermal anchoring and microdermal implants) are a design of body jewellery that allows for a “single point” piercing, i.e. only one ball or cap visible on the surface of the skin, secured with a small titanium plate under the skin itself.
Microdermals are designed to be permanent piercings, a revolutionary alternative to surface piercings, which generally have a temporary lifespan. Their small size and implant technique make them far more versatile than the conventional surface piercing and they can be placed almost anywhere on the body.
The implant process itself is quick, relatively comfortable, and non-invasive in comparison with the more complex transdermal and subdermal implants.
Since their introduction as a prototype by Custom Steel at APP in 2006, Microdermals have met with overwhelming demand in the USA, a trend which has quickly found its way to the UK. Dermal anchoring has only been practiced commercially in the UK for around 8 months in highly specialist establishments. As a result of their aesthetic appeal, ease of insertion, and considerable versatility, Microdermals are rapidly increasing in popularity.
Anchoring has been refined over the past decade, with very early implants being produced using nostril wires and labret bars. The designs now commonly used are based around the appearance of the larger transdermal implants, and can be inserted using either blades or dermal punches. At Holey Skin we prefer to use blades, due to the greater control over the depth and position of the piercing, and as a result there is minimal trauma caused to the surrounding tissue.
Whilst the anchoring plate itself remains permanently under the skin, the internally-threaded caps (the visible part of the microdermal) can be changed after 6-8 weeks.
The range of styles is ever-increasing and currently includes Blackline, fireballs, acrylics and gemstones.
Removal is possible, but the method used is heavily dependent on how the implant has been treated and how long it has been in for: as a result, removal should only be attempted by a fully-trained body modification specialist. Scarring varies greatly, again depending on what removal method was used and the condition of the surrounding skin. All jewellery used is made from surgical-grade titanium, sterilised using a 3-stage cleaning process which uses both ultrasonic and autoclave sterilisation. All needles used are brand new and sterile, and disposed of safely after use.
An initial consultation is required to determine the placement of the anchor, and also to provide in-depth information and aftercare advice.
Microdermal anchoring clients must be over 18 and able to provide valid photo I.D. (i.e. provisional/full driving licence, passport, Citizencard etc.) at initial consultation. An appointment will then be made for the piercing itself (usually lasting 30-45 minutes).
Microdermals are currently carried out at all Holey Skin Studios, by Stewart, Senior Body Piercing Practitioner. Examples of microdermal anchoring can be seen in the gallery section of this site. Please phone 0117 907 6568 for more information...
